The AdventureBike RiderCours. The ADV is an introduction to riding adventure-type motorcycles on off-pavement surfaces. It provides fundamental skills on a low-traction surface with an emphasis on body position and control use specific to off-pavement riding. Followed by a ride off-road on gravel/dirt roads.
This is not just follow the leader on gravel roads. Once away from the range (an additional 2 hours on the gravel/dirt roads and water-crossing training) Riders will be able to put their newfound skills to use on a dual / adventure sport ride with the instructors.
ADV Familiarization - Motorcycle equipment and features
Basic Controls - Motorcycle controls for starting, stopping, straight-line riding, turning
Controlled Loss of Traction - How and when to use it
Standing Up - How, when, and why
Pivot/Rider Posture - Shifting weight and posture for bike control
Counterweight - Maneuvering for slow, tight turns
Straight-Line Braking - Controlling a rear tire skid, threshold braking
Rear-Wheel Steering - How and when to use rear-wheel brake or throttle to steer
Obstacles - How to cross over obstacles effectively
U-Turn on a Hill - How to make a U-turn when going uphill
Traversing a Hill - How to ride across a hill
Adventure Prep - Tips for going out and having an adventure
·It is a partial-day event lasting around five hours.
·There are ten riding and four discussion lessons.
·You must bring your own ADV bike for this course with valid insurance and have an M class license.
·Your ADV bike needs to be in good running order and will need to pass a pre check inspection before class begins.
·As an off-pavement course, the ADV riding lessons require more stamina and dexterity than typical on-pavement street courses.
1. What defines an ADV for the purpose of this course?
·An OEM-manufactured, street-legal motorcycle designed for long-distance highway riding as well as off-pavement riding. Motorcycles must have off-pavement capabilities.
·Conversion or modified motorcycles are not suitable.
·Motorcycles with tires designed solely for on-pavement operation are not suitable.
2. Can dual-sport motorcycles be used?
·Yes. Most standard, dual-sport motorcycles are appropriate.
3. Can street motorcycles be used?
·No. There must be some off-pavement design according to the manufacturer per the owner’s manual.
